Changes to prescribing

As previously communicated with you, East Leicestershire and Rutland CCG is facing a tough year financially.

To return to financial balance in the timescale required by NHS England, the CCG needs to reduce its planned spending to address the £18 million gap by March 2017.  The CCG’s Governing Body is committed to achieving this by improving efficiency and getting more value from the money we spend.

This means we have to make some difficult decisions regarding what the CCG is able to fund/invest in.

One of the areas where we can make significant savings without impacting on essential healthcare services is to stop prescribing medicines which are easily and cheaply bought in pharmacies and supermarkets, including paracetamol and ibuprofen for simple short term conditions, cough and cold remedies, hayfever tablets and coldsore treatments.

Some patients will be exempt from this change if they have particular conditions, for example those who need paracetamol to manage chronic pain, and these people are being advised to discuss this with their GP. A list of these conditions is available on our website:www.eastleicestershireandrutlandccg.nhs.uk/your-health/local-services/self-care.

There is also extensive self care information and advice on where to get more information.

East Leicestershire and Rutland CCG has taken this step after working with Healthwatch Leicestershire to get views from patients about changes, particularly to paracetamol prescribing. The majority of respondents to this answered that they would be affected either not at all or only a little by the changes to paracetamol prescribing. It has also taken clinical advice before reaching this decision.

Attached is a news release that we will be issuing to the local media later today.

If you have any questions or concerns about the changes to prescribing, please contact the Medicines Management Team at the CCG.
